What Determines How Far a Javelin Travels?

The athlete's skill is the biggest factor in throwing distance. Javelins are also made for different skill levels: if a beginner throws a javelin meant for an expert, it will not perform as intended. We rate skill levels as:

1. Beginner
2. Intermediate
3. Semi-professional
4. Professional
5. Expert

Three factors decide which javelin suits which skill level:

a) Stiffness: A stiff javelin has less elasticity, so it flexes and vibrates less in the air. That means less air drag and more distance, but it puts much more strain on the upper body, so it suits semi-professional throwers and above. A soft javelin flexes and vibrates more and meets more air drag, but it puts less strain on the upper body, so beginners and intermediate throwers can use it to practise technique and build arm strength.

b) Aerodynamics: Flight dynamics are a key part of making a javelin, and they are what separate a beginner javelin from an expert one. The choice of material and the fine geometry affect both the price and the throw distance. Each javelin is fine-tuned for a specific ratio between stiffness and balance.

c) Balance: Together with aerodynamics, balance decides when in flight, at a given speed, the javelin turns its tip down towards the ground. If your javelin tends to land flat, try a javelin with a lower level of aerodynamics and balance. Our top-performing javelins have their centre of mass close to the limit allowed by World Athletics.
